Jags’ Barnes gives police two versions of one-car accident

Barnes initially called police around 6:30 a.m. on Sept. 29 and said he crashed into a tree after falling asleep while driving to a mandatory treatment session. Four hours later, after police arrived at the scene and found Barnes gone, the player called back to report his 2007 Mercedes stolen.

When an officer told Barnes he had listened to the original 911 call, the player decided to stick with his original story, according to the supplemental report.

Barnes, already on probation for a drunken driving charge last November, was cited for careless driving and leaving the scene of an accident. He also was charged with violating a provision of his probation that limited his driving to work purposes.

Barnes wasn’t charged with filing a false police report because he backed off the stolen car claim before it was written.

Barnes refused to address the supplemental report Wednesday. Coach Jack Del Rio also declined several questions about the incident.

“The bottom line is I don’t have anything to add to the situation,” Del Rio said. “He has got to deal with his situation individually. He’s got some citations that he has to deal with.”

Asked whether he thought the NFL might get involved now, Del Rio responded, “I would be shocked if they would be concerned about a citation.”

Barnes is scheduled to appear in court on the traffic charges Oct. 30.

After Barnes was arrested last November, he made an obscenity-laced rant about racist police in Jacksonville and playing in a hick town. He apologized for those remarks, saying they were brought on by the stress of his arrest, and was benched for a game.

He pleaded no contest in July to the charge, was sentenced to six months’ probation and had restrictions placed on his driver’s license.
